Grande classique, le sommet du Mont Thabor peut se faire par de nombreux itinéraires, tous très fréquentés. C'est un sommet relativement élevé (3 178m) mais ses pentes débonnaires et ses larges sentiers en font un but facile et sans danger, malgré les approches parfois longues. La chapelle du sommet est un but de pèlerinage en été et il convient de la traiter pour ce qu'elle est, c'est-à-dire un lieu sacré (et non un bivouac). L'approche peut se faire depuis Laval ou le refuge des Drayères, extrémité de la route de la Clarée, depuis le fond de Vallée Etroite (l'accès le plus fréquenté), depuis Valmeinier et depuis le refuge du Thabor. C'est ce dernier accès qui sera décrit ici.
